Addictive Document

On Oct. 20 Qi Mu Space is to present “Addictive Document”, Sun Cunming’s first solo in China. The exhibition will last until Jan. 6, 2019.

The exhibition derives from Sun’s writing notes. When sorted out, the originally independent texts constitute a self-referential “discourse system” that is ready to “reward” the artist for his effort.

These works at this exhibition are based on the objects and visual materials he collected in his daily life. The visual conciseness attests to his prolonged deliberation about the layout before any minimum action --- an effective way to give full expression to the potential poetic and political power. A video is a sculpture with the camera lens and time; a scenario truly reflects the logic of our life.

For somewhere reigns an old hostility / between living ones life and doing ones work.(Requiem, Rainer Maria Rilke)

“Old hostility”is a key word for an artist’s relation with his ambient. Such self-conscious “hostility”allows some room just right for him to review the logic between objects, between human beings, and between objects and humanity. Sun shows due respect to these everyday stuff without any wilful alteration. Rather, he avails himself of the language to make full use of these symbols he has summoned and translates them into visual “vocabulary”with multiple significance. In the meanwhile, psychology of form is introduced to revoke or hamper any efforts to interpret the morphological significance --- the placement of the elements determines the discourse represented by the artwork. With the suggestibility generated from the interaction between the way of arrangement and the form, the works take on a mystic, poetic atmosphere.
